Existing-home sales fell 2% in August as equity breadth narrowed to 36% above the 50-day line
The National Association of Realtors said Thursday that August existing-home sales slipped 2.0% to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 3.98 million, down 1.2% from a year earlier, with inventory at 4.9 months of supply. The rate-sensitive corners of the stock market are telling a matching story: Charles Schwab, in a market update published as of 9:22 a.m. ET Thursday, counted only 36% of S&P 500 members above their 50-day moving average, down from 47% the previous Friday.
